NEW YORK, June 13, 2013 – Eisner Award Hall of Famer Neal Adams will create the fourth in a series of exclusive Wizard World variant covers of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead #1 comic, provided for free to all full-price attendees at Wizard World Comic Con NYC Experience, June 28-30 at Basketball City (Pier 36) in Manhattan.  Wizard World and Skybound, Kirkman’s imprint at Image Comics, have teamed to produce the line.

Heroescon 2013 review

By Shawn Scott Smith| June 12, 2013 | Comments Off

herpsSpent the weekend in Artist Alley of Heroescon in Charlotte, NC. It was the second year we’ve done the artist alley and the 4th year in a row we’ve attended. I can honestly say that the convention traffic seemed lighter but I think it’s because the show doubled their floor size. Luckily the promoters chose to use some of the extra space for wider aisles instead of fitting as many vendors as possible inside.
It made it easy to leave the table and go see one of the wonderful artists or great dealers in attendance.

So many artists who work in comics are always in attendance at Heroes and are always available and approachable. It really is a great show about comics. And the highlight for me is always Indie Island showcasing so much creativity you can’t even fit it all in your mind.

One of the things I love about Heroes is how friendly of a show it is. You rarely encounter a grumpy guest or dealer and it is very kid friendly show.
I plan on attending every year for as long as i can. You should too.
And here’s the Rocketeer holding my sketch card. Cool.

AM2 is MIA

By Petrea Mitchell| June 9, 2013 | Comments Off

AM2 (Anime.Music.Manga), after announcing an attendance of 15,000 last year, has mysteriously gone silent. The last activity on its Web site, Facebook page, and Twitter feed was February 8, and attempts to contact them directly have so far been unsuccessful.

It was to have been held August 23-25 this year at the Anaheim Convention Center, but the convention center’s calendar does not list it.

Rumors of the form “my friend X heard from staffer Y that it was cancelled” are circulating, but there has been no official word of cancellation, and people are also reporting that their PayPal registration function still takes money. Nevertheless, if you were thinking of registering, it would be a good idea to wait for some positive sign that it’s still going to happen.

LoneStarCon 3, the 71st World Science Fiction Convention (“Worldcon”), is delighted to announce “Teaching Science Fiction,” a workshop for teachers, librarians, and parents on how to use science fiction as a teaching tool. The workshop is a collaborative effort with LoneStarCon 3, and is organized and presented by AboutSF, an organization based at the University of Kansas.

This workshop is a half-day seminar on developing a class on science fiction for primary or secondary students. Educators are the target audience for this course, whether they are interested in designing a class on SF, or want to incorporate SF readings into existing classes. No prior knowledge of the genre is assumed, and general attendees are welcome to attend as well.
