Geek Purchase of the Week: BRAWL!

By Shawn Scott Smith| March 9, 2008 | Comments Off

61hsaxfwe3l_aa280_.jpgSuper Smash Bros. Brawl Geek Purchase of the week. I think we all know it’s Super Smash Bros Brawl. I mean even Foxtrot realizes it’s the most anticipated game ever on an Nintendo system and that’s saying something. I may wake up enough here in a bit to drive on out and pick up my copy.

Geek Purchase of the Week.

May I reccomend Jason’s The Last Musketeer. This comic by one of Europe’s finest tells the tale of one of the Three Musketeers, still alive in the present day and Earth’s only hope to fend off a Martian invasion. (of course that makes perfect sense:>) If you’ve ever read Jason’s The Left Bank Gang or his I killed Adolf Hilter, then you know what to expect, but for everyone else it’s a unique comic storytelling style that you can only find in the comic format full of great color and humor and truly bizarre story.

Just heard this sad news. Gary Gygax one of the creators of Dungeons & Dragons has passed away at age 69. Role playing just wouldn’t be where it is today without him, so lets all lift a glass to him this weekend whether you play or not.

Marscon 2008: The British are Coming

By Shawn Scott Smith| March 3, 2008 | Comments Off

Marscon 2008 in Bloomington, MN was very good to me.
I had to work Friday morning and made the five hour trek just in time to catch the end of the Lost panel. Then I had some free time to check out the dealer room where I managed to keep my wallet in control and not buy things I had no use for. Got my bid in at the art show and got some dinner at the very well staffed and stocked Consuite. A very good consuite with actual food (including some great soup). Opening Ceremonies were great with a video game theme. Hopefully someone will upload it to youtube soon. Went to panels on Star Trek and Torchwood and then checked out the parties!
Some highlights were the Serenity Party and the Awesome klingon blue room. Who knew blue was such a blinding color?
Ended up going to my hotel down the road at mindnight since I was wiped out.
Day 2 was a unique day at a con for me as I usualy bounce from place to place pretty quickly. I went to a few panels in the morning including a Q and A with actor Bill Blair and then I sat my butt down and listened to some very funny music from the dementia artists performing. Paul and Storm were by far my favorite act of the day. It’s nice that Marscon has the dementia track. It adds personality to the convention that is quite unique and I hope this continues to grow.
Took a dinner break and then went to the masquerade. Did just a litle partying before I went to the Arcana room and watched thirty days of night. It’s actually pretty good. Oh and yeah the British Military were at the con and they were seen all over the Party floor. weird.
Sunday I only got to go to two panels because snow was coming and I needed to get home. Beat the snow by about an hour here so Im glad I left when I did, but I hope to return to Marscon many more times in the future. A plus. Good job everyone running the show.

Day 2 at Marscon

By Shawn Scott Smith| March 1, 2008 | Comments Off

Just got back to the hotel for day 2 of Marscon. Had a good time yesterday, attended a Star Trek, Torchwood and Actor Bill Blairs panels. Checked out some party rooms. The Serenity party has awesome decorations and The klingon party is very blue. Ill upload pictures on Sunday so youll know what I’m talking about. Going to head over to the fan faire in a minute and see some Dementia artists this afternoon. May have to head out early tommorow, for you guessed it, incoming weather.
