Wizard up to same tricks?

By Shawn Scott Smith| August 13, 2013 | Comments Off on Wizard up to same tricks?

In a report over at Comics Beat they are reporting that Wizard has scheduled a wizard world for May 4th weekend of next year at the Minneapolis convention center. That’s two weeks before the long running MCBA springcon is scheduled to take place.

At best it feels like a competitive move by wizard and at worst seems very harmful to the industry they aim to live in. I know the twin cities have a pretty full lineup of conventions, at last count over 20 annual shows, but not all are comic based and there are plenty of months on the calendar without any comic focused show in the Minnesota area.

Wizard took a lot of heat a few years back when they tried unsuccessfully to stage a summer show in Atlanta near the dates of popular Heroescon in Charlotte. Ticket sales were awful and they moved the show to December. I attended that show and it wasn’t up to par with what Wizard usually offers. It was their only attempt at a show in Atlanta.

While I’m sure comic fans in Minnesota would love a Wizard show, this won’t sit well with the vendors and artists who make a show great.
Wizard hasn’t officially announced the show, so here’s hoping they don’t try to bully the long running local con. If history proves anything, it won’t be the best move.
