Dublin announces Worldcon 2019 bid

By Petrea Mitchell| August 31, 2013 | Comments Off on Dublin announces Worldcon 2019 bid

A bid has been announced for Dublin to host the 2019 World Science Fiction Convention. Dates have not been mentioned, but it would probably be held across Ireland’s August bank holiday, which would make it August 1-5.

The bid will begin active campaigning next summer, when Dublin hosts the European Science Fiction Convention.

One unusual twist is that the bid will have access to government assistance:

Fáilte Ireland and The Dublin Convention Bureau have stated that they wish to support a Worldcon in Ireland. This support would come in a variety of forms, including monetary assistance if we are successful with our bid.

See all the details at the official site.

There are currently no other bids for 2019, with Montréal’s bid having moved to 2017. New Orleans is the only bidder for 2018, and the only one for 2020 is New Zealand, standing in for the about-once-per-decade trip to Australia that Worldcon has been making since 1975. This once again raises the question of whether the primarily North American voter base will allow two Worldcons in a row outside North America, something which is about to be tested with Helsinki going for the year after London. More on that later today!
