New Worldcon bids

By Petrea Mitchell| December 3, 2011 | 5 Comments

Two new Worldcon bids were announced at Smofcon’s Fannish Inquisition session: one for a return to Montréal in 2019, and one for Mariehamn, Finland in 2016. Neither appears to have an online presence yet. Update 12/4: Mariehamn now has a Web site.

The current bid lineup now looks like this:

2014: London, unopposed
2015: Spokane vs. Orlando
2016: Kansas City vs. Mariehamn
2017: Japan (city to be determined) vs. New York City
2018: New Orleans, unopposed
2019: Montréal, unopposed
2020: New Zealand, unopposed*

All these bids made presentations at Smofcon except for NYC (which has previously stated an intention to hold off campaigning until 2013) and New Orleans (which was still assembling a committee at last report).

*Unless you count the hoax Boston for Christmas 2020 bid, which also made a presentation at Smofcon.

Update 12/7: More on the Mariehamn situation here.

I am all for getting the Worldcon further into the world, so a Finnish Worldcon sounds great. I will never be able to get to it, but still, it sounds great. Another Montreal Worldcon? Well, it’s up the highway from me, but how old will I be in 2019? I will be 60. I can’t plan that far in the future right now. I will keep my ears open, though…

If you’re listing New Zealand as unopposed, you should also list KC as unopposed. The Mariehamn bid is no more serious than Boston in 2020 at Christmas.

I’m hearing a variety of different interpretations of the bid from every direction but the bid itself right now. I’ve already asked them for some official comment, and will post it here when I get it.
