Worldcon Diary part 2: Hugo Category News

First, a breaking news update: Two people were injured falling on one of the escalators, but the injuries were minor. (There was blood, but both people were sitting and talking calmly with the hotel staff and fans who were administering first aid.)

And now back to Worldcon. Here’s this year’s Hugo trophy, unveiled at the opening ceremonies rather than the Hugo ceremony:

The Saturday business meeting was almost entirely taken up with debate over several proposed Hugo category changes. I’ll just skip to the results.

  • Best Fancast was ratified as a permanent Hugo category. This covers fan-made podcasts and similar, kicking them out of the Best Fanzine category.
  • The proposal to simplify and clarify the distinctions between Best Semiprozine and Best Fanzine was ratified with one very important change: the restoration of the phrase “or the equivalent in other media”, allowing blogs and other electronic-only publications to remain eligible as fanzines.
  • Best Graphic Story was re-ratified to keep its sunset clause from taking effect, making it a permanent category.
  • The addition of a Best YA Book category was voted down once again. This was the only really contested vote, with 51 in favor and 67 against.

The Hugo ceremony itself is tomorrow night at 8pm local time (1am Monday UTC). Dragon*Con members will be able to watch them locally on a video feed; the Internet at large has a choice of the Worldcon channel at Ustream or the CoverItLive chat at the Hugo Awards Web site.

And for those of you at Worldcon, be at the Grand Ballroom early, say around 7:15 pm, to catch a flash mob performing “The Tom Bombadil Rap”.
