About Those East Coast Worldcon Bids

By Petrea Mitchell| July 19, 2011 | Comments Off

Back in May, I did a rundown of current Worldcon bids noting the curious lack of both contested bids and East Coast cities in the list. Well, that’s been taken care of: say hello to Orlando in 2015, competing against Spokane for that year.

Orlando has previously hosted one Worldcon: MagiCon, the 50th, in 1992. Nearby Miami Beach has also hosted it once, in 1977.

There is also word that a bid is planned for New York City in 2017, going up against Japan, but it won’t start active campaigning until 2013.

Mark Wheatley, Insight Studios Group Head to Baltimore

By Shawn Scott Smith| July 15, 2011 | Comments Off

Mark Hempel, Robert Tinnell, and Mike Gold at Baltimore Comic-Con

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – July 15, 2011 – Eisner, Inkpot, Mucker, Gem, and Speakeasy award-winner Mark Wheatley, architect of Blood of the Innocent and Mars, will be joined by a full slate of creators from Insight Studios Group for this year’s Baltimore Comic-Con, August 20-21, 2011, at the Baltimore Convention Center, which is located directly across the street from Baltimore’s historic Camden Yards sports complex at 1 West Pratt Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.

Insight Studios will represented by Sandman: The Kindly Ones artist and Tug & Buster creator Marc Hempel, EZ Street and The Wicked West writer Robert Tinnell, and former First Comics and DC Comics editor and ComicMix Founder Mike Gold.

From Vertigo’s Breathtaker to IDW’s Lone Justice, from Impact’s The Black Hood to Moonstone’s The Spider, from Comico’s Jonny Quest to Malibu’s Tarzan The Warrior, and from ComicMix’s Hammer of the Gods to his self-published Radical Dreamer, Wheatley’s achievements have been widely recognized in and out of the comics business. His work has been repeatedly included in the annual Spectrum selection of fantastic art and has appeared at The Norman Rockwell Museum, Toledo Museum of Art, Huntington Art Museum, James A. Michener Art Museum, and the Library of Congress, where several of his originals are in the permanent collection. EZ Street, Lone Justice, Mars, Frankenstein Mobster, and Hammer of the Gods are currently available from IDW Publishing.

Among Wheatley’s latest projects, Skultar, has just been announced to start in Dark Horse Presents #7. Written by M.J. Butler, Skultar is a loving (but none-too-kind) send-up of barbarian stories. The Spider: Satan’s Murder Machines collects Norvell Page’s epic crime drama in a deluxe hardcover for the first time with a cover by Wheatley, and The Mark Wheatley Gallery collects a number of the artist’s 2010 13″ x 19″ art prints in book form for the first time.

Starbase Indy July Newsletter

By Shawn Scott Smith| July 14, 2011 | Comments Off

All contents from the email,

“We have a delightfully varied menu for this year’s Starbase Indy. We have added TWO more actors to our guest list. What’s not to like? Many of you said you couldn’t attend in the past because it was Thanksgiving Weekend. Due to circumstances beyond our control (bowling?), Starbase Indy, the 16th Generation has moved to December 9-11, 2011. So now is the time to put your money where your mouth is. Come join us for a fun weekend of Klingons and music. The current weekend rate is still low (prices increase August 1) and we have two hotel options with great standard and suite room rates.

Entire Weekend ONLY $35
Enjoy 1990s Rates

Starbase Indy is going to bring another FREE HD movie to main programming, we just haven’t decided which one. We usually kick off the convention with our FREE HD movie, but due to our date change, the convention will start later in the day around 4pm to 5pm. You will not need a badge for the movie, but it may convince you to join us for the rest of the weekend.

We will still be taking programming very seriously and will be lining up a plethora of interesting things to see and do. Secondary Programming will have some of your favorites back and new ideas are being discussed.

tribblesMaking tribbles and wave bottles with Pamela Easterday were very popular so we will have decided to continue with our workshops for children (Please note that children 11 and under must be accompanied by an adult) along with Cereal and Cartoons on Saturday morning. We want to get your kids addicted to SBI interested in science and speculative fiction early. And, for those adults in the crowd, we have it on good authority that Barfleet plans on entertaining those 21 and older with another fantastic party. If dancing and good ole spirits aren’t your thing, we are trying to convince Dr. Rob to regale us with his tales of Weird Science.

We will have the Dinner with the Stars, the Masquerade, the Charity Auction, Karaoke and panels on a variety of subjects. You can visit the arcade, watch movies, filk, converse in the Con Suite or visit our Dealer’s Room.

Westercon 66 site and origin story online

By Petrea Mitchell| July 13, 2011 | Comments Off

Westercon 66 now has an official Web site, where the main news is that since Granzella’s is really not sufficient for a full convention, the committee is searching for a suitable place somewhere in the Sacramento area.

Meanwhile, for those who have the stamina, the video of the epic Business Meeting that selected the winning bid is now online. Although the meeting was 3 hours long, the video runs a mere 2 hours 15 minutes, omitting a stretch when the meeting was not technically in session.

(For those who don’t, here’s the short version.)

Horror Realm Presents….

By Shawn Scott Smith| July 12, 2011 | Comments Off

World premiere of Beverly Bonner’s live stage show “Casey-30 Years Later” at Hollywood Theater in Pittsburgh Horror Realm sponsoring event which includes screening of cult classic film “Basket Case”

Pittsburgh, PA – July 10, 2011 – Horror Realm is pleased to sponsor a very special evening for fans of the cult classic film “Basket Case” on Friday, August 12 at the Hollywood Theater in Dormont (Pittsburgh). The program of film and live entertainment opens at 8 PM with a Q&A with freelance artist Joshua Emerick, who is the illustrator of the Basket Case: The Comic serial slated to appear in Fangoria magazine.   Fans can then enjoy a screening of the original “Basket Case” film.  Released in 1982, the movie tells the story of a young man who carries his deformed conjoined twin brother in a large basket while seeking vengeance on the doctors who separated them against their will.  Written and directed by Frank Henenlotter, “Basket Case” became a hit as a midnight movie and spawned two sequels.  The world premiere of Beverly Bonner’s stage show Casey – 30 Years Later follows the film screening.  The show catches up with Bonner’s character from the film series, who is running an old age home for prostitutes.  Casey is interviewed by a college reporter (played by Michael Varrati) to find out what she’s been up to all these years.  Actress and comedian Beverly Bonner has appeared in films, stage productions and television.  In addition to her role as Casey in the “Basket Case” series, Ms. Bonner has appeared in more than 45 stage plays, most notably featured in the long running “Women Behind Bars” with the late actor Divine.  Ms. Bonner wrote, produced and directed “The Beverly Bonner Show” and “Beverly Bonner’s Laugh Tracks” for television which ran in New York, Los Angeles and Detroit for many years.  She can currently be seen in “The Gloria Glitter Show”, “New York Comedy Connection” and “Help!! Let Me Out of Myself!!!” at the Broadway Comedy Club in New York.  Visit her web site at www.beverlybonner.com for more information on upcoming shows. Read more
