Ray Bradbury goes to Hollywood XPO
By Shawn Scott Smith| August 29, 2010 | No Comments
Special Guest: Ray Bradbury Joins Hollywood Xpo!
Ray Bradbury, the legendary writer, will be making a personal appearance for 1 DAY ONLY at Hollywood Xpo, Saturday October 16 2010.
(Please note, Ray’s appearance at Hollywood Xpo may be subject to his health.)
Ray Bradbury is one of those rare individuals whose writing has changed the way people think. His more than five hundred published works — short stories, novels, plays, screenplays, television scripts, and verse — exemplify the American imagination at its most creative.
Once read, his words are never forgotten. His best-known and most beloved books, THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES, THE ILLUSTRATED MAN, FAHRENHEIT 451 and SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES, are masterworks that readers carry with them over a lifetime. His timeless, constant appeal to audiences young and old has proven him to be one of the truly classic authors of the 20th Century — and the 21st. His stories have been adapted for film, TV, as well as comic books with 27 appearing in classic EC Comics.
In recognition of his stature in the world of literature and the impact he has had on so many for so many years, Bradbury was awarded the National Book Foundation’s 2000 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, an the National Medal of Arts in 2004. Read more

How fan funds began
By Petrea Mitchell| August 25, 2010 | No Comments
TAFF, the Trans-Atlantic Fan Fund, is the oldest of the various exchange programs which send fans from continent to continent to experience foreign conventions. An ongoing effort to digitize old UK fanzines has turned up this article from 1953 describing the founding of TAFF.
Coroncon, where the meeting described took place, was the 1953 Eastercon (UK national sf convention). “The San Francisco World Convention” was SFCon, held September 3-6, 1954. It was also the 1954 Westercon.

Construct-a-con!
By Shawn Scott Smith| August 23, 2010 | No Comments
Links and review of Construct-a-con provided by reader Skennedy(Scott) below,
“Videos from a Relaxacon that just occurred in Livonia, MI! We had 50-60 people for our second annual summer event (August 13-15). Construct-a-con (or Construct) was created by the staff of some of the larger MI Sci-Fi cons who wanted a small event that is planned by the attendees (it creates itself!). Our Guest of Honor is chosen at random from all the attendees, and our (retroactive) Con Chair is chosen Saturday night based on who brought the most fun to Construct.
This year it was Scott (yes, that is me) and Lucy Kennedy for creating Construct Family Feud and a Cupcake Decorating contest! The whole weekend was an amazingly good time, and a great “recharge” for the rest of the year.

ReConStruction video blog, and maybe more where that came from
By Petrea Mitchell| August 23, 2010 | No Comments
Ha, the editor’s busy and I can post anything I want! So here’s the other thing I was up to at ReConStruction: video blogging as a test run for a larger project that would involve blogging from a convention every weekend for a year. See the full sequence starting here, or see the demo reel with a link to my pathetic pleadings for sponsorship here.
Yes, the proposal budget does include room for better equipment.
