By Petrea Mitchell| April 28, 2012 | Comments Off on EightSquaredCon statement on gender parity
EightSquaredCon, next year’s Eastercon, has posted a long and thoughtful statement titled “Why we are committing to Gender Parity on Panels”. It sets out the specifics of their policy:
We will therefore, as a default, look for two good female and two good male panel members, and will keep track of moderators to ensure that we are not ending up with (as all too often happens) mainly male moderators.
And examines the roots of existing imbalances:
2) Eastercon membership now shows broad gender parity; fandom is no longer male-dominated (at least not in terms of numbers, and arguably not in terms of active participation.)
3) The Eastercon membership, taken collectively, constitutes an exceptionally interesting, experienced and well-qualified group of people. In my own expericne I recall one prominent visiting science lecturer saying that of all the audiences he’d given talks to, including major science festivals, the Eastercon membership was the most engaged and erudite he’d ever seen.
Historically the bias was because (2) was not true, but that’s not really valid any more. It is more likely that what happens is that (3) is not fully exploited and that in practice the pool of programme participants is drawn from a relatively small subset of convention membership. That pool is small in part due to inertia (“Andy, Bob and Charles always do well on panels”) and partly because women may feel disinclined to volunteer for programme if they see that panels are male-dominated.
It also provides historical background, and rebuts some of the arguments made against such a policy when the discussion began earlier this year. The whole thing is well worth a read.

By Petrea Mitchell| April 26, 2012 | Comments Off on Anime Boston statement on this year’s incidents
This year’s Anime Boston made a local paper for EMTs and police being summoned to the convention. Anime Boston has now released a statement providing more detail of what happened at an informally organized dance:
What actually happened is much less dire than rumors have indicated. Two events required response during Saturday night’s dance. First, a medical emergency occurred; EMT’s were called in to remove a dance attendee for treatment. Next, an alleged theft of a bag took place. Boston Police arrived and conducted their investigation on-site, and during their inquiry, marijuana was found. An arrest followed.
The dance was ultimately closed down due to perceived overcrowding issues.
The situation has unfortunate echoes of Boskone 24 in 1987— also a fast-growing convention at the time, also attracting a young crowd, and also running into problems associated with the party aspect of the con. It was also, coincidentally, at a Sheraton, although a different one from Anime Boston.
Boskone’s reputation was damaged so badly that it was forced to leave Boston for five years. Here’s hoping Anime Boston’s meeting with hotel and city officials tomorrow has a better outcome.

Lauren Cohan (Maggie Greene), Steven Yeun (Glenn), andChandler Riggs (Carl Grimes) will take over the Mile High City months after the shocking finale of their 2nd chart-busting season. And the Rocky Mountain region couldn’t be happier.
The demand and excitement for Denver’s first Comic Con, taking place Father’s Day weekend, June 15th-17th, 2012, has been so great that the organizers were recently encouraged to move up within the Colorado Convention Center. Originally positioned in the smaller Mile High Ballroom the event will move to Hall A upstairs with room to stretch out with over 100,000 square feet. Dr. Christina Angel (Co-Convention Director) explains: “We planned on the smaller space for our first year, but the response has been so overwhelming – from vendors, dealers, artists and attendees – that we quickly outgrew that space. I should have known this would happen; Denver has such an amazing and diverse population of active and enthusiastic people, and we’re so proud to call it our home. After walking the sprawling space, I think everyone is going to be as excited as we are to give Denver the pop culture experience it so richly deserves.”
Lauren Cohan and Steven Yeun are the perfect pairing to appear together at the inaugural event as they play opposite each other as Maggie and Glenn, the budding romance that is contrasted against the apocalyptic world of

Remembering Vintage Star Wars: An Interview with Skye Paine & Stephen Danley of The Star Wars Collector’s Archive: The Chive Cast
By Shawn Marshall| April 25, 2012 | Comments Off on Remembering Vintage Star Wars: An Interview with Skye Paine & Stephen Danley of The Star Wars Collector’s Archive: The Chive Cast
Any child of the 70’s or 80’s must remember toy aisles filled with Star Wars. Similar to the way George Lucas and Star Wars took over the theaters, Kenner and their line of Star Wars toys took over the aisles of stores all over America. Who didn’t want a Death Star playset under their Christmas tree and a one-piece-bathing-suit-wearing-Hammerhead in their Easter basket? It was a simple time when Han shot first and Darth Vader was…Darth Vader. However you might feel about the modern era of Star Wars, it is undeniable that the foundation of the franchise carries with it some of our best cultural memories and that a major part of these memories ties back to those beautiful little figures that dangled from the shelves of our favorite Zody’s, T.G. & Y., Service Merchandise or Toys r Us. By Shawn Marshall| April 22, 2012 | Comments Off on 5 Panels to Watch at Phoenix Comicon
For those of you that follow my con adventures, you know that one of my favorite things about Phoenix Comicon (PCC) is the variety of guests and panels that PCC offers. Not only does this four day show provide some of the best in pop culture, but it also provides these guest in a variety of formats to their panels. This means that PCC packs a schedule that can take hours to analyze. In fact, San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) is the only con that I spend more time planning my panel schedule. Fortunately, one huge difference between SDCC and PCC is that there aren’t the same time commitments regarding lines. That being said, it is easy to miss some great panels, so here are a few I spotted for you that might otherwise get lost in the glitz of some of the larger ballroom offerings: Read more
