Garth Ennis and Dynamite Entertainment Cast their Shadow in Baltimore!

Garth Ennis Shadow 01 Cover
The Shadow written by Garth Ennis

Published by Dynamite Entertainment

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - April 9, 2012 -The Baltimore Comic-Con is excited to add prolific writer Garth Ennis and publisher Dynamite Entertainment to the growing list of talent and exhibitors attending this year’s show. The show will take place September 8-9, 2012 at the Baltimore Convention Center.

Ennis, who is probably best known for his work on the Vertigo series, Preacher, as well as the creator-owned series, The Boys from Dynamite Entertainment, began his career in 1989. After several critically acclaimed works in England, he broke into the American comic scene in 1991.

Building a following on such titles as Hellblazer(Vertigo), The Demon (DC Comics), Hitman (DC Comics), Preacher (Vertigo), and PunisherMAX(Marvel Comics), Ennis is renowned as one of the best writers to come out of the “British Invasion” of the early-’90s and received and Eisner Award for Best Writer in 1998 and an Eagle Award in 1999 for Best Color Comic Book (for Preacher).

Currently, Ennis is wrapping up his final story arc forThe Boys, as well as handling writing duties for the relaunch of The Shadow for Dynamite Entertainment. Ennis will be working with artist Aaron Campbell (Green Hornet: Year OneDark Shadows) to bring the classic pulp franchise back to the printed page for a whole new generation of fans.

The Shadow is probably the last established character I like that I haven’t gotten around to writing yet, certainly on this side of the Atlantic,” said Ennis in a recent press release. “It makes a kind of bloody, bullet-riddled sense: I always had a feeling our paths would cross sooner or later.”

Dynamite Entertainment, whose publishing works includes both licensed properties and creator-owned work, will also be exhibiting at this year’s show. Founded in 2004, Dynamite won the Diamond Gem Award for Best Publisher Under 4% of Market Share in 2011.

Eastercon streaming this weekend

By Petrea Mitchell| April 6, 2012 | 1 Comment

Those of us unable to make it to a con in person this weekend can still get a bit of a convention fix, it appears, courtesy of this channel on Ustream. Eastercon will be streaming all programming from its largest function room, including the British Science Fiction Association Awards, and readings from GoHs George R. R. Martin and Cory Doctorow.

Program information is available in various formats here. The stream will cover everything in the Commonwealth Room. Note that times are in British Summer Time (1 hour ahead of GMT, 5 hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time, 8 hours ahead of Pacific Daylight Time).

This does not appear to include the Hugo nominees announcement, which will take place in a different room. We are still waiting for word on whether any of the conventions hosting the announcement will be streaming it.

Ichibancon going to two weekends?

By Shawn Scott Smith| April 5, 2012 | Comments Off

From their website:

“Ichibancon is Charlotte’s very own anime convention! Now for 4 days in January! We celebrate Japanese animated films and shows, J-pop/rock, and many aspects of Japanese culture! We hope you’ll join us as the first convention of the new year in the Carolinas!

Are you sitting down? We’ve got some big news for you! We might be crazy but we’ve decided that Ichibancon 2013 will take place on January 4-6, 2013 AND January 11-13, 2013. Each weekend will have different programming, different dealers, and different guests. Just imagine… the Vic Mignogna weekend… the Not Vic Mignogna weekend. Subtitled videos one weekenddubbed the other. So many possibilities!

This is going to take place at the lovely Renaissance Charlotte Suites Hotel, featuring free parking, cheaper room nights, shuttle services to the airport and Lynx train, better elevators, bigger and nicer rooms.

Needless to say we’re very excited about 2013″

Kind of different strategy, but i guess you could have two totally different con experiences, but not sure how well this will work. We will see I guess.

MORGAN SPURLOCK’S COMIC-CON EPISODE IV: A FAN’S HOPE FINALLY HITS THE BIG SCREEN

By Shawn Marshall| April 4, 2012 | Comments Off

Despite the fact that I’ve waited over 25 years for the upcoming Avengers film, I don’t think there will be a film that I enjoy more in 2012 than Morgan Spurlock’s San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) documentary, Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope. I had the pleasure of seeing this film a few weeks ago and I absolutely loved it. Although I feel that the film would translate well to a weekly reality show (imagine following a different geek’s journey to SDCC each week), I’ll take what I can get for now and that means many trips to the theater to see it while it is in limited release. If you love the world of conventions even half as much as I do, you must get out there and support this film this weekend. Here is the latest update on its release: Read more
