FanimeCon 2010 Announces GAINAX Executive Hiroyuki Yamaga as Guest of Honor

By Shawn Scott Smith| April 24, 2010 | Comments Off

San Jose, CA (April 23, 2010) – FanimeCon proudly announces the return of GAINAX Executive Hiroyuki Yamaga as Guest of Honor at FanimeCon 2010, which will take place over Memorial Day weekend, May 28th to May 31st, at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. Mr. Yamaga was FanimeCon’s very first Japanese Guest of Honor, and he has been bringing prominent talent from the Japanese anime industry to FanimeCon for well over a decade.

Hiroyuki Yamaga is currently the Executive Director of GAINAX. He started his anime career in 1981, when he worked with fellow Osaka Geijutsu University students Takami Akai and Hideaki Anno to create the opening animation for the 20th Nihon SF Taikai (the Japanese Science Fiction convention more commonly known as DaiCon III). At the request of Studio Nue, Yamaga-san joined the production staff for Super Dimensional Fortress Macross in 1982. GAINAX was founded in 1984 after beginning production on the animated movie, Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise, which was released in 1987. The movie became an instant cult classic as the legendary “feature-length animation movie created by a group of anonymous youth.” Yamaga-san has also garnered praise for his screenwriting in works such as Aim for the Top! and Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. Mr. Yamaga is currently preparing GAINAX’s new projects.

Seattle in 2012 Westercon bid news

By Petrea Mitchell| April 23, 2010 | Comments Off

Bobbie DuFault, chair of the Seattle in 2012 Westercon bid, says:

I wanted to formally announce that our dates are firm for Thursday, July 5 through Sunday, July 8 and that we will have days available on both sides so travelers can enjoy our lovely state. There are some plans at this time to provide some informal fannish fun things to do on the 4th so those wishing to spend the full holiday with us can rest assured there will be something to do.

The hotel that I have filed with, the SeaTac Marriot has given us a firm offer, which at the time of filing we were going to go with. However, in the meantime the Hilton and the Doubletree made better offers. The best all around for our convention, should we win, is from the Doubletree. We wanted to let the voters know before the vote that it is most likely we will sign a contract with the Doubletree when we win. We will have the contract in hand in Pasadena if anyone should want to review it.

Pasadena is the site of this year’s Westercon, where the 2012 site selection vote will be held.

Noel Neill to Attend Phoenix Comicon in May

By Shawn Scott Smith| April 21, 2010 | 2 Comments

SUPERMAN LEGEND FLIES INTO PHOENIX COMICON

Phoenix, Ariz.—Noel Neill, star of The Adventures of Superman, will attend Phoenix Comicon in May. The star portrayed Lois Lane against Kirk Alyn’s Clark Kent/Superman in Sam Katzman’s Superman serials, and later on played against George Reeves in the television series.

“Noel Neill is a living legend,” said Matt Solberg, Convention Director. “Anyone who loves Superman knows who Lois Lane is, and Noel Neill is Lois Lane.”

Neill played the role of Lois Lane for over ten years. Later on, she would continue to appear in Superman productions, playing roles such as Lois Lane’s mother in the 1978 Superman, and had a cameo as of dying widow Gertrude Vanderworth in the more recent Superman Returns.

“Phoenix Comicon can’t wait to present Noel Neill,” said Kate Davids, Communication Manager. “She’s an integral part of Superman’s history, and it will be fantastic to see her in Phoenix.”

More info can be found at Phoenix Comicon’s website, http://www.phoenixcomicon.com.

Phoenix Comicon is the signature pop culture event of the southwest, presenting guests and programming for hobbyists by attracting the top segments of the comics, anime, sci-fi, film, TV, and gaming industries. Entering its ninth year, Phoenix Comicon is expected to draw over 10,000 attendees to its May 27-30, 2010 convention held at the Phoenix Convention Center and Hyatt Regency, downtown Phoenix.
